I Started Running as a Beginner: My Experience So Far

Hello Readers,

I hope everyone is having a great month so far.

I know, I have abandoned my blog. Adulthood has been a pain recently, but I keep moving.

This blog post is about how I started running, how I’m planning to continue, and the benefits.

When did I start running?

I started running in September after seeing people on social media doing marathons, and I came across a video by lifestyle influencer Linda Sun about her running journey.

Something in her video inspired me to start running.

So, I checked the weather app first to check if it was going to rain, but it was early September, so technically it was still summer in the UK (South East of England). I planned a day to start, and ta-da, started running on a Sunday morning.

First day

The first time isn’t usually the best experience because it’s something new and unfamiliar. The last time I did something similar was during physical education in secondary school, which was… well, don’t remind me… over ten years ago (I’m 26!). Back then, we ran multiple laps around the school field.

This experience was the first time I did something in my own terms. It wasn’t easy since I had planned to do it since 2024, but I was anxious about people walking by or judging me on my fitness level.

My health and fitness level were terrible!

After putting on my trainers, I stepped outside. I began with a five-minute warm-up walk before starting some light jogging for one minute. I aimed for two minutes of jogging, but I found myself out of breath and panting. So, I switched to intervals of walking and running: I walked for 5 to 10 minutes, then jogged for one minute, and continued this pattern for an hour.

I checked my Apple Fitness ring on my phone and realised I burned at least 300 calories.

Once that was done, I walked back home, hydrated and rested.

The next day, however, wasn’t restful since I had to travel to work and…it wasn’t fun; both of my legs were sore, and I couldn’t walk properly. Then I noticed I didn’t stretch prior.

My legs were sore for at least 2 days.

Did I continue after my first day?

Yes, but unfortunately, I became ill, like proper ill, due to acid reflux, which lasted for 2-3 months (I’ll go into it in another blog post) 😳

But the good news is that I’m better now and continuing my normal routine and eating right (trying to).

After four months, I bought a fitness smartwatch and started running again, which led to significant improvements. I began running longer distances and reached places I had never gone before. I even sprinted for the first time in years, something I am really proud of. My goal was to clear my head of stress and depression, especially after the Christmas break.

The experience was amazing! However, it had to end because I only had my first 30 minutes of lunch break. I work from home sometimes and plan to spend at least an hour on Sunday morning.

Thanks for reaching the end!

Hope you enjoyed reading my running experience and will probably share more details in the future.

Due to my job and other commitments, I wouldn’t be posting as much, unfortunately, but…I’ll try to post more content this year since I kind of abandoned my blog.

Well, have a nice week and…

Bye x.
